Learn how to make kanzashi-inspired floating sequin wedding flowers with wedding scraps and trims. Brides hosting an eco-friendly wedding and reception or searching for sentimental keepsake projects can recycle sheer, fine textiles to make the kanzashi petal fabric square base. This project uses the basic kanzashi round petal as the basis for the flower. Recycle leftover wedding trims, such as sequins or beads, and include the embellishments as part of the wedding flower. Use your imagination to create wedding accessories with the kanzashi-inspired floating sequin wedding flower.

Create Fabric Square Patterns

Draw a fabric square pattern on pattern paper measuring 4 inches in width and length. Use a graph ruler and felt pen to define the pattern lines. If you do not have pattern paper, recycle brown paper bags to create the pattern and cut out.

Cutting Sheer Fabric Squares

Pin your pattern on sheer fabric wedding scraps with extra-fine straight pins. Cut out 10 squares with fabric scissors to ensure smooth pattern edges. Use delicate, sheer textiles lke tulle, georgette and organza.

Adding Floating Sequin

Rotate the fabric square to a diamond position on your work table. Pour individual sequins or beads into the center of the fabric square.

Create the Round-Shaped Kanzashi Petal

Fold the upper corner to the lower corner, creating a mini triangle. Gently hold the folded fabric and sequin with your fingertip to secure in place. Fold the outer right corner to the lower center point. Fold the outer left corner to the lower center point. This creates a mini diamond shape. Carefully flip the folded diamond over.

Finishing the Round-Shaped Floating Sequin Kanzashi Petal

Fold the outer right corner to the visible center line. Repeat and fold the outer left corner to the visible center line. Fold the petal in half along the center line to create the first petal.

Adjusting the Floating Sequin Petal

Pierce through each of the folded petal layers with an extra-fine glass-head straight pin. Cut away the uneven points at the base of the petal with fabric scissors. Repeat steps 3 through 6 until you finish the 10 petals.

Assembling the Kanzashi-Inspired Floating Sequin Wedding Flower

Thread your hand-sewing needle with white thread. Remove the straight pin and pierce the sewing needle through the folded layers. Gently pull the thread through, leaving a 4-inch tail. Repeat with the subsequent petals.

Finish the Kanzashi-Inspired Floating Sequin Wedding Flower

Leave a 4-inch thread tail on the remaining end and make a simple knot. Carefully pull the thread tails, making sure the sequins remain at the petal point. Adjust the petals with your fingers to create the flower. Cut a fabric circle out of the same wedding scraps. Dab fabric glue around the back of the flower and cover the flower center opening with the circle. Let dry your brand's recommended time. Dab glue around the center front opening and embellish with your leftover wedding trim. Enjoy!
